Busybody (Pony hair patterns!)

Even though the past week has been very busy with work and other appointments, I did find time to finish up working on both Applejack and Twilight Sparkle. Just one more pony to go (Dr. Whooves was a late addition to the set) and my shipment is ready to cross the ocean! I actually managed to finish up Pinkie Pie a while back, but I don’t believe I shared her with you guys back then. So this will be a pony-filled post ^_^

The basic pony pattern that I used is still the same one from Hooked on Anime, but she doesn’t have a pattern for the hair. So I tried some different techniques myself and wrote down what I did.

For Twilight Sparkle, I used the same loom-technique I had used to create the mane for Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. I will most likely be using this technique for Dr. Whooves as well. I used a piece of cardboard as a loom. It takes a while to get the hang of crocheting like this, but in the end, it is definitely worth it.

What you get during the process is this:

This was for the tail, I used a bit too much lavender and pink, but I still like the way it looks in the end.

I’ve already posted about Rarity, but now I’ve got the time to type out the pattern ^_^

Rarity Hair Pattern

Tail
Row1: ch71, turn
Row2: starting from second chain from the hook, sc1 in every chain, ch1, turn (70)
Row3-10 (8 rows): sc1 in every chain, ch1, turn (70)
Finish off and sew the tail so that it is round at the top, then sew it to the body.

Manes (make about 4, or as many as you like)
Row1: ch36
Row2: starting from second chain from the hook, sc1 in every chain, ch1, turn (35)
Row3-6 (4 rows): sc1 in every chain, ch1, turn (35)
Finish off and sew the manes in a row to the head and neck, slightly overlapping each other.

Bangs
Row1: ch21, turn
Row2: starting from second chain from the hook, sc1 in every chain, ch1, turn (20)
Row3-7 (5 rows): sc1 in every chain, ch1, turn (20)

Whenever I work in rows, the end result tends to curl up a little. Usually, I pull it straight, but since the hair needs to be curly, I left it like this.

For Pinkie Pie, I needed some tighter curls, which were pretty easy to make

Pinkie Pie Hair Pattern

Tail
Row1: ch81, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every chain
Row2: repeat Row1
Row3: repeat Row1
Row4: ch66, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every chain
Row5: repeat Row4
Finish off.

This should leave you with five long, curly hairs stuck together. Bunch them together at the top and sew to the body.

Manes part 1
Row1: ch36, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row2: ch31, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row3: ch26, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row4: ch15, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row5: ch15, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Finish off

This should leave you with five strands of curly hair with one chain separating each.

Manes part 2
Row1: ch16, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row2: ch26, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row3: ch31, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row4: ch36, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row5: ch36, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Finish off

Manes part 3
Row1: ch6, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row2: ch11, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row3: ch16, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!
Row4: ch21, starting from second chain from the hook, sc2 in every ch, ch1, do not turn!

Sew the parts of the manes onto the head and neck on top of each other with the shortest strands of hair in the front.

Bangs

Finish off and sew to the head.

(I didn’t have a lot of the lighter pink yarn that I used, so I alternated between dark and light pink. Eventually, I didn’t want to make the hair too dark, so I didn’t make any more. If you have plenty of yarn, you can make more parts for the manes and give her a fuller head of hair)

Applejack was a whole different story, I decided to make it a bit easier on myself and work in rounds for her hair. (there is no need to join rounds)
I have to admit that I’m not entirely happy with the tail, but I didn’t see it until it was already sewn onto the body and I didn’t feel like redoing it. If I were to make her again, I would make the last part of the tail a bit shorter (so fewer rounds in the end). The following pattern is the way I have made it as you can see in the picture.

Finish off and put the hairbands around the small part of the tail and manes, then sew the ends together.

Without her hat, Applejack should look like this:

That is a serious bald-spot she’s got there! ^_^” So we need to make a hat for her!

R2: 2sc in every st around (12)
R3: 2sc in every second st (18)
R4: 2sc in every third st (24)

R6: back loops only, 1sc in every st (30)
R7-11 (5 rounds): 1sc in every st (30)
R12: front loops only, 1sc in every st (30)

Fold the top of the hat a little bit inwards and sew it onto the head. Stuff it lightly while sewing.

And there you have it: Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Pinkie Pie and Applejack are all done!
Now just to get myself to finish working on Dr. Whooves and my friend in the States will be all set for Christmas ^_^

Friendship is Magic

Around the beginning of this blog, I’d worked on Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash from the series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Back then, I’d already mentioned that I might make the rest of the set, The Mane Four (which is not a typo) when I’d run out of projects. And this time has come. Well, I didn’t exactly run out, but I didn’t know what to work on next.

I’ve already got Rarity finished:

And Pinky Pie is well on her way:

I should be able to finish her up this weekend and then it’s just Applejack and Twilight Sparkle to work on. I’m going through them a bit quicker than the last time I worked on the ponies, but then again, being familiar with the pattern goes a long way. Also, I don’t have to make wings for them, so there are a few less parts to work on.

The basic pony pattern is from HookedOnAnime as before, but the manes I’m working out myself. I’ll post a quick how-to when I’ve finished all four, in case anyone is interested.

In other news

One of my friends -the lovely Jaqueline over at EenMooiMomentje– has been going through a pretty rough time. There are plenty of things that can cheer me up and at the top of that list is crafting with friends, drinking tea and eating sushi. So that is exactly what I invited her over for a few days ago. We had a great day, me working on my latest project and her knitting away at a warm hat for the coming winter. Our cat Wisky was especially interested in her knitting needles (something she’d never seen before in her life), while our other cat Japie thought of them more as something he desperately needed to murder as soon as possible. Despite all the distractions, Jaqueline still got a bit of work done.
The sushi was awesome as always. (I still believe I don’t get to eat it nearly enough)
After dinner she had to go home again, but we will definitely be meeting up more often (as long as both our work schedules allow it ^_^” )

Check out her blog sometime, it’s a great read about anything from knitting and crocheting to beauty products! (It is all in Dutch though, keep that in mind *cough*googletranslate*cough*)
